Eating Too Much

On my last day in Edinburgh I realized I needed to get some stuff for my family so I headed up to the Royal Mile. It was only a 15 minute walk from my hotel (albeit uphill) and it was such a beautiful day (again) and I couldn't help but snap a photo.

But first, breakfast, where I ate so much I was almost in physical pain.
Urban Angel, again. Highly recommend! Also suggest getting there nice and early!
 St. Giles Cathedral.
Edinburgh Castle while walking up from my hotel.
Ugh. Right behind me is the street that leads to the castle.

That was the end of my last full day in Scotland! I got dinner at a place called Slug and Lettuce, a really cool space if you like to drink or go to a nice bar. I went on a Monday night at 4, so it was pretty dead. The restaurant is really neat though, and my food was good (and, because it was Monday, 50% off!).

The next morning I got up around 7:30, because I'm paranoid, and got on the bus back to the airport. Snapped this as we were driving by.

Also, I got to fly home (11 hours) on one of the new, giant, fancy planes with 2 floors! It was pretty neat.

So.

I went to Scotland initially to write and take a break and just have some time to myself. In the end, I've realized that I don't really enjoy traveling alone (I'm going to write a post on it) but I also did a lot of things that made me uncomfortable (like going out to eat on my own). As I was talking to my mom in the park, I was finally feeling more at home. Of course, it was the last day.

So while I didn't write much (though I did get a few hours in on the plane), and I ended up doing a lot of things with other tourists, I still count this trip as a success. Just the fact that I could get myself to another country, navigate the city, and experience these things, isn't something I should just look over. It's an accomplishment, in many ways, for many reasons, and I'm so glad I got the opportunity.

Now I get to spend 3 weeks at home before I head to New York. Again.

Happy Travels!

Looking the Wrong Way for Cars

Today I woke up early (and by early I mean 8 AM) and decided to go to this restaurant right next to my hotel, Urban Angel. I got French toast that was under a literal pile of bacon, but I ate it before I took a picture so all I have is this smoothie with orange juice, berries, and bananas.
Then I walked down to the Royal Botanical Gardens. It started in 1670 (!!) and have moved and expanded to where it is today. There's also other branches you can visit in other areas of Scotland, based on where the best climate for the plants are, like in the Highlands!

Arthur's Seat (on the left) and the Salisbury Craigs (on the right).

The National Monument, perpetually unfinished.

Nelson Monument, in honor of Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson, made to look like an upside down telescope, with a time ball on top to help ships in Leith and Firth of Forth set their chronometers.

Dugald Stewart Monument, a renowned Scottish philosopher.
View of Edinburgh Castle and Scott Monument.
The Surgeon's Hall Museums. Inside this there is a small pocketbook, made from the skin of a man named William Burke, who, along with his partner William Hare, murdered 16 people in order to sell the bodies to be studied by anatomy students. There's also a lot of preserved organs, old medical tools, and ENTIRE SKELETONS OF CHILDREN WITH THEIR VEINS FILLED WITH WAX USED TO STUDY HOW BLOOD FLOW WORKS.

I'm not particularly squeamish but I lasted about...15 minutes. I found the book about 10 minutes in and then decided to call it quits.

After this I made my way back to my hotel on the other side of town. Even though I hit a lot of touristy spots today, I started to finally feel like I was finding my stride. Maybe breakfast helped, since there were locals and tourists alike there. Or that fact that I woke up before 2PM. Anyway, I had a great time today.

Happy travels!

P.S. I'm home now, btw. :)

Almost Pooping My Pants

So I didn't wake up until 2PM. And I only woke up because someone outside was practicing opera, complete with piano accompaniment, and a bachelorette party moved in to the hotel. At least, I'm assuming, since they were having a great time blowing whistles, shouting, and scream-singing along with Shout Out to My Ex by Little Mix. So I finally got up and left to hike up to Arthur's Seat, a large hill on the outskirts of the main city center.

I grabbed a banana from a local, tiny shop on the corner and started my walk to Holyrood Park. Arthur's Seat is next to Holyrood Palace, where the Queen stays when she comes to Scotland. My phone said the hike was a half hour but I am sad and out of shape so it took me a little longer. Still, it wasn't too bad and there were tons of tourists and locals alike. It was popular with a lot of joggers too (I can't imagine running up the hill though, jeez) and people walking their dogs.

It was really nice. One of my favorite things last time I was here was going out to the Highlands and experiencing the ruggedness. This reminded me of that. The trail was clear but otherwise unmarked. People could take whatever route they wanted, really, and once you neared the top, you basically just had to climb over rocks. It provided a beautiful view of Edinburgh and the gardens. It had that touch I felt last year, the wind and cold and rock.

View from the bottom

This is from about halfway up
There was an area just before the last hill to the top.
 From the top

An entrance into Holyrood Castle, where Mary Queen of Scots lived for a bit and the current Queen stays when in Scotland!

And then I promptly left because I desperately needed a bathroom.

Anyway, I walked back towards my hotel, grabbed dinner at TGI Friday's (I know, I know. Really American of me) which was apparently the place to go on a Saturday night because it was LOUD and crowded. But I also have forgotten to eat on this trip so the burger was more than welcome. My body hurts from so much walking and generally just no sleeping but tomorrow I'm tackling another hike (hopefully before 4 PM this time) and will hopefully get some writing done.

Happy travels!

Tripping Down the Stairs

So I landed in Edinburgh, Scotland after traveling for (over) an entire day. I left San Francisco at 9 PM on May 3 and landed in the United Kingdom at 7 AM on May 5th. I couldn't check into my hotel until 3 PM so I had to wander around for quite a while. I decided to walk up to Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile, on the hunt for another keychain of a highland cow to replace my unraveling one at home (as of evening on the next day, I still haven't found one :( )

I also went inside St. Giles Cathedral. We walked by it a bunch last time I was here but I never went inside. Pictures weren't allowed unless you paid a fee so I don't have any photos, but it absolutely gorgeous inside. The interior is surprising simple architecturally but the stained glass and little details really stand out. As I was walking in I heard a tour guide talking about a little room off to the right, where The Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle, the highest order of chivalry in Scotland, meet (WITH THE QUEEN). The room is new, an addition added in the early 1900s, but was designed to be in the same style so there is crazy intricate woodwork. Above each seat are these crazy ornamental columns with the person's sword on it and where on top sits an idol made by the person. It's super cool, and the guide who was there was really nice and informative. It definitely was a hidden gem, and if you are ever visiting Edinburgh, I highly suggest visiting St. Giles Cathedral and finding that room.

I grabbed a sandwich from Nero, a cafe on the Royal Mile and walked back down towards Prince's Street, where the glade and Scott Monument are shown in the picture at the top. The Royal National Gallery was there (and free!) so I decided to walk through that. It's not a huge art gallery by any means but it is interesting to see the range of Scottish painters and landscapes/portraits. The building itself is absolutely beautiful, with each room a different, vibrant color and the shapes reminded me of an old Victorian mansion if the walls had been taken out. Also, my favorite thing ever is when two older British ladies talk about art. "He looks quite eager, doesn't he?" towards a portrait of a young man. It's fantastic.

This painting was thought to be done in majority by Leonardo Da Vinci!

After that I was going to go see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 at the movie theater. On the way, though, I decided to walk up the 287 steps to the top of the Scott Monument, a towering Gothic looking thing right next to Princes Street Gardens. Wow, was that spiral staircase small. The landing were also tiny, the one at the top so narrow that we all had to shuffle in a circle just to get back to the staircase. It was also so windy. But the view was great!

So then I walked to the movie theater. I know what you're thinking: "Jasmine, you really went all the way to Scotland to see a movie?" And no, no I didn't, but see a movie I did! I liked it a lot. And I didn't fall asleep! Though on the way out I did miss a step and I fell. Like, onto my knees on the floor. Not many people saw, I don't think, but oh boy was that embarrassing. I walked to Tesco (a local grocery chain) and got a salad, some snacks, and KINDER EGGS MY FAVE.

The precious.

Finally, FINALLY, I could check in. I wasn't carrying my heavy backpack, thank god, but my feet hurt so badly (probably why I missed the step) and had been traveling for over a day and I was so, so gross. So I checked in, took a shower, and fell asleep for 4 hours, despite my attempt to beat the jet lag. And then woke up, had a snack, and proceeded to stay awake until 4AM, reading and wide awake. So that made it fun to try and wake up the next day.

Spoiler: I slept in until 2 PM.

Happy travels!

Falling Asleep at the Met

So back in January I decided I was going to back to Scotland. It was a rash decision, brought about by the most recent anger from not doing something challenging in my life and the fact that I had decided to apply for grad school and I thought: YOLO. And yes, I actually thought YOLO at the time. I do it a lot, actually. As a person who almost never makes spontaneous decisions, it's a good phrase for me to keep in mind, as silly as it is. Sue me.

Anyway, I found a great flight for a great price that included a 13 hour layover in New York. At the time, I had just gotten back from a job interview in New York (if you didn't know, I want to get a job in publishing and New York is where it's at) and I had navigated New York by subway without getting too lost and so I thought, why not, I'll spend 13 hours in New York.

Well, I didn't get the job. But on the day of my interview, I was only in the city for 6 or so hours. I didn't get to do a lot of stuff, like go to some semi-famous eateries, like Momofuku Milk Bar and Absolute Bagels. So after my dad dropped me off at San Francisco International Airport (thanks dad!) I got on one of the nicest planes ever (it had the fancy first class seats that were full sized!) watched Arrival even though I was already tired (I like that movie a lot), and then slept for a couple hours.

So after I charged my various electronics in the airport (and waited for it to get light outside, since I landed at 5:45 AM), I went to find bagels. I walked to Central Park and ate my breakfast, watching jogger after jogger run by. So. Many. Runners. The bagels were delicious, though I decided I like West coast bagels more *ducks from flying objects*.

I walked to Momofuku Milk Bar, where I really wanted to try the birthday cake but was not about to buy/eat an entire 6" cake by myself so I went with the cake truffles, which were delicious (and so, SO sugary). I went back to Central Park (many, many blocks farther south) and sat by the Reservoir and watched the world go by. The nice thing about a place like New York (and Edinburgh, for that matter) is that there are so many tourists that are more tourist-y than you, so even though I had my giant backpack and looked a little haggard after a redeye cross-country flight, I stuck out less than some.

At this point I had walked almost 10 miles and had been up since 8 AM the day before with 2 hours of sleep on a plane (a very nice plane but I was a plebeian in economy so not too comfortable) and my back was dying from my backpack so I decided to kill time at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I had been there once before, when I was in the seventh grade, but I wanted to check my bag and I love museums so I thought, why not? I loved it, though I was so exhausted I found myself spacing out quite often and, quite literally, falling asleep when I sat down to rest my feet.

In the Japanese Art exhibit.

(It's the year of the Rooster, my sign!)
Taxidermic deer, covered in fancy technology-created plastic pixel balls. I don't know.

One thing I noticed was that these stairs smell like the stairs outside. Like, New York City has a particular smell to me (if you've been there, you probably know). It's like a mix between wet stone and, often times, urine or dirt. It's not particularly bad (seriously, it's not worse than any other large city) but for some reason these stairs smelled that way, even though they were inside. I kind of liked it - a touch of the outside in an otherwise pristine interior.

So I called it quits and went back to the airport early, which didn't end up being that early at all. I waited about an hour by the time I went through security and found my gate. At this point I was trying to stay awake so I didn't miss my flight and once we where on the plane, where I was horrified there was no TV (#firstworldproblems), but did manage to get a whole row to myself,  I only waited long enough to shovel my dinner down my throat before I passed out. Like, for the whole 7 hour flight. Except once when I got too cold, got a blanket, and shifted around to get comfy. I woke up an hour away from a different continent. What the heck.

Feeling refreshed I managed to get a ticket for the shuttle to the city center on my phone and I was on my way! It was cold and old and lovely. And here is where I'll leave off before my next installment.

Happy travels!
